Despite a slow start to the respiratory illness season, Windsor Regional Hospital officials say preparations are underway for an expected surge in the coming months. At a recent hospital board meeting, staff received an update on plans to address potential capacity and staffing concerns during the respiratory virus season. Since Oct. 1, the hospital has recorded 17 positive tests for respiratory viruses, including Influenza A, COVID-19 and RSV. Kristin Kennedy, Windsor Regional Hospital President and CEO, said they expect cases to peak in January following the holidays. “We are working with our partners at Erie Shores HealthCare and Hotel-Dieu Grace hospital on what our surge in capacity planning is, as well as with our long-term care and retirement homes, as well,” Kennedy said. Preparations include analyzing current capacity levels and assessing where the hospital has “flexibility,” Kennedy said. In the event occupancy reaches the expected 120 percent, patients in units such as rehab could be sent to Hotel-Dieu Grace. “So, if we have an abundance of no beds or blocked beds within our emergency room, what other areas within the organization can we open to be able to enhance our capacity,” Kennedy said. Last week, the hospital introduced visitor restrictions for paediatric and NICU, where patients are at higher risk of complications from respiratory illnesses. Kennedy encouraged residents who are eligible to speak with their doctors about getting vaccinated. “Of course, during seasons of individuals congregating together, you use precautions, with handwashing, covering your mouth when you’re coughing, masking, if you have symptoms, and all of those things that we’re well versed in now since the pandemic,” she added. Those who live, work, or attend school in Ontario and are over six months of age are eligible for a free flu and COVID-19 vaccine. Residents can contact their primary care provider or a participating pharmacy to speak about vaccine availability. - With files from AM800’s Meagan Delaurier.
