Discretion is advised A 50-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged following an international investigation into the alleged creation of child sexual abuse material. According to Winnipeg police, U.S. Department of Homeland Security investigators notified the RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Centre about an investigation involving a Canadian suspect using an online alias. Investigators learned the suspect was living in Winnipeg, and local police started investigating. Investigators say the alleged offences took place between December 2017 and July 2023. Police say the suspect communicated with two people in the Philippines who had several young children in their care ranging from preschool age to school age. Police allege the communications involved creation of child sex abuse and exploitation material in exchange for money and the suspect would also send material to the individuals. Investigators also claim material was distributed on social media platforms in the U.S. Investigators also allege the suspect demanded more material between March and July 2023 and threatened to distribute previously obtained material to the family and friends of the individuals in the Philippines if they didn’t comply. Police executed a search warrant on a home in the south area of Winnipeg and took a 50-year-old man into custody. Several electronic devices were seized. The man was arrested and charged with multiple child pornography offences and extortion. He was released on a Crown consent order prohibiting contact with people under 18. None of the charges have been proven in court.
