Coroner’s inquest into death of New Brunswick inmate to be held next month

A coroner’s inquest into the death of an inmate at a New Brunswick jail last year will be held next month.

A coroner’s inquest into the death of an inmate in custody will be held at the courthouse in Campbellton, N.B., next month.

Jean-Martin Couture was found unresponsive in his cell at the Dalhousie Regional Correctional Centre in Dalhousie, N.B., on Sept. 22, 2025.

He was taken to the Campbellton Regional Hospital, where he died three days later, on Sept. 25, 2025.

The coroner’s inquest – a formal court proceeding that allows for the public presentation of all evidence relating to a death – will be held from July 6 to 8.

“Deputy chief coroner Emily Caissy and a jury will publicly hear evidence from witnesses to determine facts surrounding the death,” said the New Brunswick government in a news release Tuesday.

“The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.

Couture had been remanded into custody after being charged with the second-degree murder of Jacques Lévesque in July.
