The New Brunswick RCMP has asked the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) to review a fatal shooting by police in Matempec, N.B., on Wednesday. The independent agency is responsible for investigating serious incidents involving officers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The RCMP says around 5:41 p.m., members from the Tracadie, Neguac, Caraquet and Lamèque detachments responded to a report of an armed man in mental distress at a residence on Lavigne Road. “During the response, the man fired shots towards police, refused to drop his weapon and would not cooperate with police,” writes the RCMP in a news release on Thursday. “As the situation evolved, members discharged their firearms towards the man. First aid was immediately administered, however the man died at the scene.” In a news release on Thursday, SiRT says the investigation is ongoing.
