Fire crews were called to a home on Hillview Drive in Dartmouth, N.S., around 8:40 p.m. on Monday. There, a Jeep was on fire in the driveway. The vehicle was said to be a hybrid, so the report came in as a “hazmat call,” prompting assistance from six Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency stations. Another Jeep was parked a few feet away, appearing to be damaged, as well as the siding on the home. Hybrid vehicles often use high-voltage lithium batteries. There is no official word on the cause of the blaze, though fires involving lithium-ion batteries are said to be more intense, tougher to extinguish, and produce more hazardous smoke.
