A plate of breakfast can go a long way in supporting Veterans in the Barrie region. The Barrie Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary hosted a Saturday morning breakfast in support of the 2026 Poppy Campaign. More than 100 people joined the Legion to support Veterans. Fern Taillefer, president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 147 in Barrie said they have a $300,000 goal for their 2026 Poppy Campaign. “The Legion here for our Veterans, that’s our primary goal and so last year, we helped over 89 veterans,” said Taillefer. “We got to bring that fund back up again to help more veterans this year and next year and everything.” Five dollars from every plate went towards the campaign. The Poppy Campaign aims to help veterans offset surprising costs. “It is a special fund and when a service person needs help, for example, medical equipment, he can’t afford it, he comes to us. We’ve got the money for purchase,” said Taillefer. “Wheelchairs, walkers, refitting bathrooms, anything like that you need.” The Ladies Legion Auxiliary donated more than $2000 to kickstart the campaign. More events will be on the way in suppor of the 2026 Poppy Campaign including 50-50 draws and dances with everyone invited to attend.
