Motorists on Whitemud Drive enjoyed more room to travel over the weekend after crews completed major bridge work. The City of Edmonton said in a Monday media release that three eastbound lanes of traffic on the Rainbow Valley Bridge were open after workers completed the portion of the Terwillegar Drive Expansion project to widen the span. The city said crews continue to work on the southwest bridge, including paving the roadway and finishing construction of a median barrier between directions of traffic. Two westbound lanes between 122 and 142 streets remain open. Once the bridge expansion project is finished, drivers will be able to use four lanes over the span in each direction. The city said work on this second stage of the project will continue into 2027, including landscaping and site restoration. Workers completed two pedestrian bridges – one over Whitemud Drive, the other adjacent to the Rainbow Valley vehicle traffic bridge – that are part of the project last month. The third and final stage of the Terwillegar Drive Expansion project focuses on the roadway’s intersection with Anthony Henday Drive and is slated to be finished in 2028.
