About 1,400 students at Edmonton Catholic Schools headed back to class on Monday. They’re part of the district’s year-round schooling program, which consists of a shorter summer break and more breaks throughout the school year. The goal is to make the transitions easier on the students. Students at St. Teresa of Calcutta Elementary School were among those going back on Monday. “It allows our students to maintain more momentum from one year to the next, and it offers more breaks throughout the year,” principal Suzanne Campiou told CTV News Edmonton. “We have the same instructional hours, the same instructional days. It’s just a difference in when our breaks are.” Two other Catholic schools participate in year-round schooling, St. Alphonsus Catholic Elementary/Junior High School, and St. Catherine Catholic Elementary/Junior High School. This is the 15th year for the year-round schooling program. Most other schools in Edmonton will start on Sept. 1 or 2. With files from CTV News Edmonton’s Kendra Slugoski
