Guelph Police have made an arrest after “cash traps” were found on ATMs in the city. In a media release, they called it a sophisticated scheme to steal money. The investigation began in late June when they were contacted by an ATM technician who had received several repair requests. “The technician discovered ‘cash traps’ had been installed on the machines,” police said. “These devices exactly mimic the cash dispenser doors and were applied with double-sided tape, causing withdrawn cash to be trapped between the dispenser and the fake door. Suspects then returned to remove the trap and collect the cash stuck inside before reapplying the trap.” The devices were found on ATMs at six banks in the city. Police said approximately $4,400 was taken. A 52-year-old man was arrested on Monday. He was charged with nine counts of theft under $5,000 and seven counts of mischief under $5,000.
