Two drivers say rocks were thrown at their vehicles in Kitchener, Ont., causing damage and leaving them shaken. Melanie Champagne was travelling in a SUV on Fischer-Hallman Road, near Activa Avenue, around 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 27. “We just heard this huge pow. It was like an explosion sound,” she recalled. “Then I remember hearing glass shattering, and I looked down and glass was all over me.” Champagne was confused at first. “I wasn’t sure if we were shot at or what had actually caused it because I didn’t see the rock, so it was just kind of processing all of that,” she told CTV News. Dash cam video, however, captured the moment the large rock smashed into the windshield. Champagne said witnesses reported seeing a couple of children running away from the area after the vehicle was struck and her son chased after them, but they got away. “Unfortunately, we don’t know who they are,” she said. Another driver, Tom Troczynski, said a rock hit his vehicle several days later and in the same area. “There were four children, two on a scooter, two up top. And out of nowhere, my car gets smashed by a rock.” Troczynski wasn’t hurt but the incident caused about $1,800 in damage to his car. He also expressed concerns about the potential consequences of throwing rocks at moving vehicles. “Take better care of your children,” Troczynski warned parents. “People get silly ideas before they realize how expensive things are.” Champagne, meantime, is reconsidering whether she will drive along that stretch of Fischer-Hallman Road again. “I don’t know if I’ll take that route right now,” she said. “I don’t feel safe.” Waterloo Regional Police confirmed they are still investigating both incidents.
