Police believe flammable gas was behind the 2024 explosion that levelled a home and significantly damaged others in Transcona. On Friday, Winnipeg Police Service Const. Dani McKinnon said the explosion is believed to have been from flammable gas inside the residence. “As a result of the investigation and upon Crown review, the explosion is believed to be an isolated incident,” McKinnon said. “There are no public safety concerns connected to this incident, and no criminal charges have been laid.” A spokesperson for Manitoba Hydro, which operates the province’s natural gas distribution through its Centra Gas division, said the Crown corporation completed an investigation confirming its distribution system was not the cause of the explosion. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to Camrose Bay on June 26, 2024, around 11:20 a.m. for reports of a house explosion. Debris was scattered across the road, and only the home’s foundation remained standing. At the time, WFPS Deputy Chief Scott Wilkinson said several nearby residents were evacuated. The situation was declared under control just under two hours later. No one was home in the house at the time of the explosion. Both neighbouring houses were ultimately demolished due to the damage and have since been rebuilt. Karl Lent, who lives next door, previously told CTV News he was in his garage when the explosion hit. He described the blast as feeling “like an earthquake,” saying the back corner of his house was completely destroyed and his deck caught fire. Another neighbour who lives three houses down previously said she was in the basement at the time and that her house shook. As of June, an empty lot marked the spot where the house once stood.
