A severe thunderstorm could hit southwestern Ontario could on Wednesday. Environment Canada issued an orange watch at 12 p.m. The agency said the alert covers Waterloo Region, Guelph and Brantford, as well as all communities between Niagara Falls, St. Thomas, Grand Bend, Saugeen Shores and as far north as Belleville. “Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” they wrote. Environment Canada said there could be as much as 50 millimetres of rain and wind gusts of up to 110 km/h. If conditions worsen, it could possibly produce a tornado. “Thunderstorms are expected to develop mid to late this afternoon along and ahead of an advancing cold front,” the alert said. “There still remains some uncertainty with how strong thunderstorms could become due to some lingering cloud cover across the region which could inhibit how much instability builds in.”
