Historic Model T Fords drive into London for 69th Annual International Tour

The streets of London, Ont. are echoing with the distinctive rumble of a bygone era as the 69th Annual Model T Ford Club International Tour, dubbed the Thames Valley Tour, has officially rolled into town.

From July 19 to July 24, 2026, the city and the surrounding southwestern Ontario region are playing host to approximately 150 of the finest remaining examples of the first automobile to truly bring personal transportation to the masses.

Organized by the Ontario Region Model T Ford Club, which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the prestigious international event has drawn an estimated 350 to 400 enthusiasts from across Canada, the United States, and Australia.

The Ford Model T, produced between 1908 and 1927, is legendary for its role in transforming society.

“This is the car that Henry Ford developed. So, everybody had a mode of transportation,” explained Brian Dowell, who brought a meticulously restored Model T from Saint Clair, MI., for the event.

Mark Schneider, tour co-chair, elaborated on its revolutionary impact, “This was the first vehicle they would have ever owned. They were literally showing up at the dealership in horses and buggies and leaving with the Model T.”

The tour is not just a gathering of vintage cars; it’s a celebration of automotive heritage and the dedication of owners who preserve these icons. Many vehicles on display have undergone extensive, painstaking restorations.

Eric MacLeod’s sedan, one of two competing for the coveted Stynoski Award for the most meticulously restored Model T, has a remarkable history.

“My dad bought it as a high school student in 1952. It was in a junkyard,” MacLeod shared.

Judges meticulously examine every component, from nuts and bolts to original tools and manuals to determine the winner.

The passion for these automobiles extends beyond mechanical restoration. Some participants embrace the spirit of the era by dressing in period attire. Nicolette and Joel Merlesmith, who arrived from Virginia with their 1920 Model T, believe in fully immersing themselves in the experience.

“You’re driving around in vintage vehicles. Why not look the part?” Nicolette commented.

Their own car has a dramatic backstory; Joel recounted how Nicolette’s grandfather intervened to save the vehicle from being rolled down a hill into a dump. After decades sitting in a barn, it has recently been brought back to life by the Merlesmiths over the past two years.

Philanthropist Steve Plunkett, a car enthusiast himself, expressed his delight in hosting the Model Ts at his estate in west London.

“It won’t be back here again. So, this is sort of a once in a lifetime,” he noted, recognizing the unique opportunity.

The tour is designed to showcase the region’s charm, with participants following planned routes through London and its surrounding communities. They will be exploring scenic back roads, visiting local businesses, museums, and attractions throughout Middlesex and Perth counties.

“Every stop, every gas stop is a mini car show,” said MacLeod, highlighting the camaraderie and constant admiration these vehicles generate. Owners note that while restorations demand significant passion and investment, keeping the vehicles running mechanically is surprisingly straightforward.

With an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 Model Ts still in existence worldwide, events like the Thames Valley Tour are crucial in keeping the legacy of this groundbreaking automobile alive for future generations.

The tour concludes on Friday, July 24.
