The waters of Lake Erie, a vital economic engine for the region, are yielding a fraction of their once-abundant yellow perch, leaving commercial fishermen struggling and sparking concerns about the future of one of the Great Lakes’ most prized and profitable species. Elliott Cuck, a crew member aboard the fishing vessel C.J. Weaver, described the current season as dire. “Nothing, like next to nothing,” Cuck admitted, detailing the daily routine of dropping nets before sunrise and hauling them in by evening. “It’s really hard to catch them right now. They can be very finicky, but they just don’t seem really to be anywhere.” The C.J. Weaver, like many boats on Lake Erie, primarily targets walleye and the highly sought-after yellow perch. Yellow perch are not just a delicacy; they represent the highest value fish species in Lake Erie’s commercial fishery. Along with walleye, they are among a select group of intensely managed species subject to strict fishing quotas, underscoring their economic significance. Lake Erie accounts for approximately 80 per cent of Ontario’s commercial fishing revenue, generating over $200 million annually. Both walleye and yellow perch are MSC-certified as sustainable, reflecting sound commercial practices and agency management aimed at preserving the resource for future generations. The primary culprit behind the perch shortage, according to Vito Figliomeni, executive director of the Ontario Commercial Fisheries Association (OCFA), is a dramatic surge in the walleye population. “Elevated walleye populations,” Figliomeni told CTV News. “Since really 2020, the last seven years have been 50 to 100 million fish per year. So that is way above normal.” He explained that these booming walleye numbers not only directly prey on yellow perch but also consume the smaller forage fish – such as rainbow smelt, emerald shiner, and round goby – that perch rely on for survival. Adding to the pressure is a significant increase in the cormorant population along Lake Erie’s shoreline. Provincial records show a staggering rise in nests, from fewer than 90 in 1979 to over 13,000 by the mid-2000s. Cuck believes these large water birds are a contributing factor, “I’ve heard they can have much of 60 yellow perch a day ... And I mean the population, if you look over at the pier when you exit the harbor, sometimes there could be hundreds of cormorants.” Figliomeni acknowledged “some validity” to this concern, describing cormorants as a “nuisance species that targets perch to a degree,” but stressed there is currently no quantifiable evidence directly linking their population boom to the perch decline. He also noted that scarce forage fish might increase cormorants’ reliance on perch. Figliomeni elaborated that while the science is still catching up, Environment Ministry biologists and OCFA’s internal experts concur that walleye predation is a significant factor, a sentiment echoed by seasoned fishermen. “You know, your fishers who live it and breathe it every day right there on the lake, every day. They’re telling us that. So, we’re listening,” he stated. He introduced a caribou-wolf analogy to explain natural predator-prey rebalancing. He noted recent observations of stunted walleye growth, suggesting their own prey sources may be diminishing. “Walleye are known to cannibalize their own when forage is scarce,” he explained. “On the positive side, this may be an early indication of natural predator–prey rebalancing; time will tell.” This situation echoes historical patterns. Figliomeni pointed out that yellow perch populations experienced an even more severe dip in 1995-96, followed by a robust rebound within a couple of years, indicating the species’ capacity for rapid recovery under favourable conditions. Environmental factors are also at play. Climate change is contributing through warmer, erratic springs that can create a mismatch between perch hatching and food availability, and warmer summers that exacerbate hypoxic (low oxygen) conditions in the central basin, shrinking usable habitat and intensifying competition. Management of Lake Erie fisheries is a collaborative effort involving the multi-jurisdictional Lake Erie Committee, which includes Ontario, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. Figliomeni cautioned that decisions, such as potential walleye culls, must be cohesive and evidence-based, acknowledging differing jurisdictional priorities between commercial and recreational interests. OCFA is actively working with the Ministry of Natural Resources to quantify these pressures using scientific data, including front-line observations like photographs of walleye stomach contents revealing perch and smelt. Despite the challenges in the lake, some local businesses have not yet felt the pinch. Stephanie Smedley, a server at The Buccaneer near the main beach in Port Stanley, said, “It’s really popular. And right now we’re still maintaining getting perch. So, everything’s been great for us.” However, the long-term sustainability of such offerings remains uncertain. The current decline in yellow perch numbers presents a significant challenge to Lake Erie’s ecosystem and its valuable fishing industry. While the situation echoes past low points followed by rapid rebounds, the interplay of increased walleye populations, potential cormorant impact, and environmental changes demands continued vigilance and scientific monitoring. The hope is that nature’s own rebalancing may pave the way for a yellow perch resurgence, but only time and diligent stewardship will tell.
