London Transit riders are set to experience a significant upgrade in their daily commutes with the launch of a new, free official app. The London Transit Commission (LTC) has announced a one-year pilot partnership with Transit App, a globally recognized provider of real-time public transit information, granting users free access to features previously available only through a paid subscription. For years, riders have expressed a strong desire for a dedicated mobile application to streamline their transit experience. Western University student Ashley Taylor, who has been using London Transit for over three years, currently relies on general mapping applications. “I just use Apple Maps,” Taylor explained. While often functional, she notes the real-time information can be inconsistent. “Usually, can be pretty good. Recently it’s been a little bit more delayed just because of like construction happening in town and stuff.” This sentiment has been consistently echoed in rider surveys, which have highlighted an app as a top priority for improving service. To address this demand, the LTC has partnered with Transit App, a Montreal-based company that provides real-time transit information for over 1,000 cities across 40 countries. Stephen Miller, Transit’s Policy Lead, described the app as “an app built for and by public transit riders.” He added, “As soon as you open the app, it shows you the ETAs for the nearest bus lines, so you don’t have to go hunting to figure out what’s the best route or where’s the nearest bus stop.” While London Transit has offered real-time information on its website for years, General Manager Kelly Paleczny stated that user feedback overwhelmingly pointed towards the need for a dedicated app. “An app that we can now say is verified. We can confirm that it’s being kept up to date. It will have the same real time information that we’ve got on our website, but via an app,” Paleczny said. The partnership unlocks several key features for Londoners that were previously part of Transit’s paid “Royale” subscription. These enhanced capabilities include: Full Access to All Routes: Riders can access comprehensive information across the entire London Transit network in one centralized location. Expanded Trip Planning: The app offers an extended number of trip options, providing users with greater flexibility in planning their journeys. Personalized User Experience: Users can customize the app’s look and functionality, including setting personalized walk times to and from bus stops based on their typical pace. Automatic Detour Detection: Utilizing machine-learning technology, Transit App can automatically detect and map diversions in real-time. This means that even unexpected detours will be identified, with adjusted route paths and updated Estimated Times of Arrival (ETAs) displayed to riders, a significant improvement over deciphering text alerts. Miller emphasized the importance of such features, noting that “unpredictability can be more damaging to the rider experience than a slow trip, particularly when commuters feel they need to build extra buffer time into every journey.” He also highlighted Transit’s “GO” feature, which can turn riders into a source of live vehicle information for those waiting behind them on the same route. A significant benefit for frequent travellers is Transit App’s widespread adoption. “It’s a great app for transit riders that travel because now, they use it in London, you can go to Toronto and you’re using the same,” Paleczny commented, noting its use in other major Canadian cities like Montreal, Ottawa, and Vancouver, as well as in cities across the US and Europe. The LTC has purchased the service as part of a one-year pilot program. At the end of this period, the commission will evaluate the app’s performance and rider satisfaction to determine whether to continue the partnership. Future considerations may include upgrading to other features offered by Transit app, such as the ability to purchase fares directly within the application. It is noted that over 11,000 Londoners were already using Transit App to navigate the city prior to this official partnership. The Transit App is available for download now on major app stores. Riders who previously purchased the enhanced (Royale) package for the year can request a refund by contacting Transit App’s Customer Service at info@transitapp.com.
