Sonya Roote is the new chief of the Saugeen First Nation. Roote, a long time councillor, beat out incumbent Conrad Ritchie by a mere 13 votes for the top job. Roote says she plans to increase transparency and communication between Saugeen First Nation council, and band members, as well as, try to bring Anishinabek Police to the community to provide policing. Ritchie will remain on Saugeen First Nation council, as one of nine councillors. He’s now one of three former Saugeen chiefs, sitting on Saugeen council.
