A London, Ont. police officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing in connection with the serious injuries suffered by a 23-year-old woman. According to the province’s Special Investigation’s Unit (SIU), the officer went to the Thames-Oxford Rail Bridge on Jan. 30 of this year after the woman called police to report her intention to jump. An officer approaching the scene saw her on the ledge but was too far away, below the bridge, to intervene before she jumped, the SIU had determined. The officer radioed for help and provided aid until paramedics arrived. The SIU found the officer did nothing wrong, concluding there was no opportunity to prevent the fall. The woman was taken to hospital with fractures to her feet and left knee. The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
