A 36-year-old Gatineau man is facing charges after a woman was assaulted with a broken bottle in the ByWard Market Tuesday evening, according to police. Ottawa paramedics spokesperson Nicolas Guertin says crews were called to the intersection of George Street and Cumberland Street shortly before 7:15 p.m. The victim, a woman in her 20s, was treated and assessed on the scene before being taken to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries, he said. The Ottawa Police Service told CTV News Ottawa officers responded to a call for a woman who had been assaulted. “Officers quickly identified the subject, a 36-year-old male from Gatineau, who was then placed under arrest,” police said Wednesday morning. “The two parties knew each other.” The suspect is charged with assault causing bodily harm, possess weapon dangerous and breach of conditions. It’s the third similar incident reported at the same intersection in less than a week. On Saturday, emergency crews found a man suffering from a laceration to his face and on Sunday, a man was treated for a serious head injury after an assault. The Tuesday evening incident occurred hours after Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs insisted the ByWard Market is safe. “People need to know that the ByWard Market is safe,” Stubbs told CTV Your Morning Ottawa. “There are certain areas, there is no doubt that are a little problematic. We know those areas where the vulnerable populations do congregate, but in general, people can go down, have supper, they can shop, they can enjoy the ByWard Market, and they’ll be safe.”
