Trial of Melfort man in former partner’s killing adjourned until July

The trial of a man accused of murdering his former partner in a Melfort motel has been adjourned.

Defence requested the trial be adjourned to allow more time for evidence.

The victim’s father, Darris Dobersheck, said he’s not happy with the delay.

“Been waiting for two and a half years,” he told reporters after the adjournment. “In hindsight, like when this is all said and done, if we do get what we’re asking, then it’ll have been worth it. But right now, it’s just super frustrating.”

Cody Chubey is on trial for killing his former partner Danielle Dobersheck in March 2024 in a Melfort motel room. The two had been raising three children together.

On Wednesday, Dobersheck’s former stepmother testified that in the week leading up to her death, Dobersheck had stayed with her stepmother in Prince Albert for several days because she said she and Chubey were having relationship problems and Dobersheck was considering a temporary separation.

Her stepmother, who said Dobersheck was like “the daughter [she] never had,” testified she had been helping Dobersheck look for a new job away from Melfort.

The stepmother testified that Dobersheck had been concerned about Chubey’s mental health. Court heard that the night before Dobersheck’s death she and Chubey were out on a date night working through their issues.

An RCMP member involved with the investigation testified the bathroom door in the room where Dobersheck was found showed signs of forced entry.

Proceedings will resume July 10.
