A woman who turned in a fellow pharmacist for filling a narcotic prescription early has admitted to doing it too. In October 2021, the College of Pharmacists received a report from a pharmacist in Portage la Prairie named Caitlin Giercke. She alleged a fellow pharmacist was filling a patient’s opioid prescription sooner than allowed. While investigating her complaint, the college found Giercke did the same thing. In the college’s decision released in August, Giercke admitted to 10 charges including dispensing oxycodone with no regard to refill dates or intervals in a quantity exceeding the prescribed amount and failing to protect narcotics within the pharmacy. She was fined $15,000, ordered to pay $10,00 for the investigation’s costs, and must allow inspections of her pharmacy. In addition, she can cannot be a preceptor for two years, meaning she cannot supervise pharmacy students or new staff during that time. The pharmacist whom Giercke reported was also found guilty by the college and was reprimanded in June. That included a suspension and order to pay $100,000 in fines and fees.
