The federal government is removing four large fuel tanks from Eastern Passage, N.S., over the next two months. The Department of National Defence (DND) acquired 1350 and 1356 Main Rd. from Valero Energy Corporation last March, according to a news release. The site served as an oil refinery from 1964 to 1997 before serving as a fuel and petroleum distribution and storage facility until 2017. The government started work this week to remove four fuel tanks, a project expected to continue until late October. “Removal of the remaining fuel tanks and smaller support structures is being coordinated through the previous owner with oversight from DND infrastructure specialists,” the release reads. “Any inconvenience to the public is regretted.” The DND purchased the site to provide additional flexibility to support future Royal Canadian Navy infrastructure and operational requirements such as warehousing and refueling. Residents may see two-to-four trucks per day as material is removed from the site. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
