Calgarians can recycle more than ever before, thanks to changes to provincial recycling policy. Updates to Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility took effect Thursday, expanding the list of accepted items. It means Calgarians can recycle more household packaging and paper products in blue carts and community recycling depots. This includes flexible bags and wrappers (like chip bags and snack packaging), tubes (like toothpaste, deodorant and lotion tubes), foam (like egg cartons, meat trays and takeout containers) and aerosols (hairspray, dry shampoo, shaving foam, sunscreen, cooking spray and whipped cream). “For Calgarians, recycling is part of everyday life, and this change means more of the packaging residents use can now be recycled through the city’s residential recycling system,” said Sharon Howland with the City of Calgary. “It’s a practical improvement that makes recycling easier and more convenient for households across the city while supporting a more consistent recycling system across Alberta.” As always, recyclables must be empty and clean before putting them in your blue bin.
