The City of Calgary says its efforts to reduce excessive vehicle noise have led to lower sound levels and fewer loud vehicle events along 17 Avenue S.W. Under Operation Silent Night, the city compared data collected by a noise monitor near Tomkins Park during an August 2026 enforcement period with the same period in 2025. The city says loud vehicle events decreased by nearly 25 per cent during that period in 2026 compared with 2025. Overall noise levels also dropped by 2.38 decibels, while loud vehicle events decreased by nearly 10 per cent across the full analysis period, according to the city. “The results show that when drivers understand the rules and see a visible enforcement presence, we can make a meaningful difference in reducing excessive vehicle noise and improving the quality of life for residents and businesses,” said Brad Johnson, inspector and head of the traffic safety team. The city says its noise monitoring network provides objective data on loud vehicle activity, helping identify noise hot spots, track trends and assess the effectiveness of its initiatives.
