Construction season is in full swing in Waterloo Region and projects are piling up. As regional and municipal roads get an overhaul, drivers have been forced to find alternate routes. There are closures along several major roadways, including the Lancaster Street West off-ramp from Highway 85 and a section of Wellington Street North. With the Frederick Street bridge demolished, Victoria Street North has become a key artery, but has also recently seen lane reductions during peak hours. According to the Region of Waterloo, the work on Lancaster and Victoria is part of its 2026 planned construction program. “These projects are scheduled during the same construction season based on need, contractor availability and the limited seasonal window for this type of work,” staff said in a statement to CTV News. “When complete, the projects will improve safety, accessibility and travel for all road users through smoother driving surfaces, upgraded intersections, cycling and pedestrian facilities, transit stop improvements, and replacement of critical underground infrastructure,” the statement read. At the same time, work is being done along a stretch of Wellington Street North for a City of Kitchener project. The project includes replacing sewage and water supply systems, working on the roadway and sidewalks and installing bike lanes. The Wellington Street North project is expected to wrap up in late 2028. “The Region appreciates the public’s patience as this necessary work moves forward,” regional staff said.
