A barn along Perth Oxford Road, just east of Tavistock, has been declared a total loss after a fire tore through the structure early Friday morning. Volunteers with the Perth East and East Zorra-Tavistock fire departments were called to the property around 2:22 a.m. Bill Hunter, the fire chief for Perth East and West Perth, said the property owners were asleep as flames destroyed a two-storey chicken barn which was being used for storage. Firefighters were the ones who alerted them to the fire. No animals or humans were hurt. The flames were extinguished by 4 a.m. and crews left the property around 9:30 a.m. Hunter said the barn and all its contents were destroyed. The loss is estimated at approximately $400,000. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but Hunter told CTV News the fire was not considered suspicious.
