A 20-year-old security guard has been charged with manslaughter after a man died during an altercation at a Montreal-area grocery store. The incident happened early Tuesday evening at the IGA at 1401 Ch. Chambly in Longueuil, on Montreal’s South Shore. Longueuil police said they received a 911 call at 6:45 p.m. about a report of an unconscious man following a physical altercation. When first responders arrived on scene, they found the victim, a 42-year-old man, and tried to revive him. He was later pronounced dead in hospital. Despite the serious charge, the accused was released from custody on a promise to appear in court at a later date. The procedure is unusual in cases involving a fatality. Longueuil police say the accused must follow a list of conditions of his release. It’s not yet known if he knew the victim or what led to the conflict. Neither man was known to police. Investigators spent the evening interrogating the staff at the grocery store and are still looking to speak with witnesses to assist with the investigation. With files from CTV News’ Stéphane Giroux
