Ontario Provincial Police say two people were injured in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 69 south of Sudbury on Tuesday. OPP said the incident has now been referred to the province’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). Provincial police said officers observed “a vehicle of interest” on Highway 69 at about 10:30 a.m. “Police deployed a tire deflation device, and the vehicle subsequently lost control,” said OPP in a news release Tuesday evening. In an email to CTV News before the news release, an OPP spokesperson said the crash happened about 11:05 a.m. on Sept. 29. One person was flown to hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries” and the other taken to hospital for “for further assessment.” The crash happened between the Killarney and Estaire exits of the highway near Murdoch River Road. “The southbound lanes were closed at about 11:10 a.m. and reopened around 6 p.m., following the on-site investigation and cleanup efforts,” wrote the OPP spokesperson. Investigators are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to call OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously. Police have not said what led officers to engage with the vehicle. “OPP notified the SIU, which invoked its mandate. As a result, the OPP will not be able to provide further information,” said police. CTV News has reached out to SIU for more information and will continue to follow this story as it develops.
