Those across southern and western Saskatchewan are in store for more punishing temperatures, as heat warnings are in effect across the region. Issued Monday morning, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) forecasts daytime high temperatures of 32 C, combined with night-time lows of 16. The weather service says the extreme temperatures are expected to continue into the weekend. The warning area includes much of southern Saskatchewan, in addition to a portion of the province’s west central region. Communities that fall within the warning include Regina, Moose Jaw, Estevan, Weyburn, Swift Current, Maple Creek and Kindersley. Both ECCC and the Saskatchewan Health Agency (SHA) cautioned members of the public to aware of the signs and effects of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The SHA also warned of the danger hot weather paired with wildfire smoke poses for residents’ health. “When there is a concentration of these dangerous particles, smaller than the width of a hair, they increase the risk of irregular heartbeat, heart attack and stroke,” the health agency outlined. “People with high risk of cardiovascular disease should exercise caution during poor air quality conditions and consult their health-care provider if symptoms arise.” A full list of weather warnings for Saskatchewan can be found here.
