Saskatchewan drivers can expect speed cameras to return next month. On Tuesday, SGI announced it had reached a deal with Global Traffic Group to become the new vendor for its photo speed enforcement program. The province’s previous vendor, Verra Mobility Systems, ended its agreement with SGI earlier than expected at the end of May, according to SGI. As a result, several of the cameras Vera Mobility was responsible for installing and maintaining have been inactive over the summer months. According to SGI, photo speed enforcement will continue to work the same way under Global Traffic Group, and the equipment will be located near all the same general areas as the previous equipment starting in August. “The most visible change will be the equipment. Existing camera boxes will be retired and replaced with pole-mounted cameras,” read the release. “There are no new locations as part of this transition. There may be a slight adjustment to where the poles are placed in each of the pre-approved zones.” SGI urged drivers to slow down in high-speed and high-risk locations to help prevent crashes, injuries and fatalities. As the new cameras are installed, SGI said police will continue to enforce speed limits across Saskatchewan. SGI said the transition does not impact photo speed enforcement in work zones, as cameras have been operating in them without interruption so far.
