Swift Current RCMP is reminding drivers to obey stop signs in light of an increased number of collisions in the community. Most recently, officers received a report of a two-vehicle collision on 4 Avenue Northeast on July 27 and determined that a truck failed to obey a stop sign and collided with a second truck in the intersection. The second truck rolled and two passengers were taken to hospital by EMS with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the second truck did not report any injuries. The driver of the first truck, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, did not report injuries to police. They were issued a ticket for failing to stop at a stop sign, RCMP said. Officers with Swift Current RCMP say they are consistently seeing intersection infractions as a factor in collisions in the community, noting there have been many recently. “The majority of our city roads have a speed limit of 50 kms/hr. What I think people fail to remember is even at those slower speeds, serious injuries can occur,” Sgt. Evan Gordon, the Swift Current RCMP detachment commander said. “Intersections are among the busiest points on our roadways. We need all drivers to be attentive and follow the traffic laws.” When approaching an intersection, RCMP reminds drivers to: “Whether it’s a last-minute lane change, racing through a changing traffic light, or a decision to turn when you’re questioning if there’s enough space – impulsive decisions compromise safety,” Gordon said.
