A Winnipeg school is facing a months-long closure due to severe damage brought on by a Labour Day weekend storm. According to Louis Riel School Division superintendent Jackie Connell, flooding at Nordale School following the Sept. 6 storm is preventing the building from “being safely occupied.” Connell said she visited the school on Monday and thought the damp carpets and water-damaged walls would lead to a short disruption. However, she noted, air quality tests proved otherwise. Connell said the school division expects the school will remain closed for about four months. “Environmental testing and assessments are ongoing, and the division is working closely with environmental, restoration, and facilities experts to determine the full scope of the work required,” she said in a statement. “As a result, Nordale School will remain closed for an extended period while remediation efforts continue.” In the meantime, Nordale students and staff will be relocated beginning on Sept. 14. Kindergarten to Grade 6 students will attend Shamrock School, while Grade 7 and 8 students will be relocated to Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. Connell added the division will spend the rest of this week moving supplies and furniture to help get teachers set up at the new schools.
