Waterloo Regional Police say officers laid more than 625 charges during a three-week campaign aimed at promoting the safety and wellbeing of university and college students. Project Safe Semester ran from Sept. 3 to Sept. 25, with police conducting proactive enforcement in the university district and surrounding areas. The charges included offences under provincial legislation, the Highway Traffic Act and the Criminal Code. Police also laid an additional 96 charges during events connected to Homecoming 2026. Homecoming enforcement Of the 96 Homecoming-related charges, police said 35 were under the Liquor Licence and Control Act, 46 were Highway Traffic Act offences and seven were Criminal Code offences. The police service said the campaign involved collaboration with several community partners to support public safety during Homecoming events. Those partners included the City of Waterloo, Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services, Waterloo Fire Rescue Service, the Ontario Provincial Police, Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo. Enforcement to continue Although Project Safe Semester has ended, police said “proactive enforcement ” will continue in the university district and school zones. The service said the ongoing enforcement is intended to help ensure the safety of students, residents and other people in those areas.
