CTV News Montreal anchor Kelly Greig has the latest details on the key races in Montreal, Laval, and Longueuil in the 2025 municipal elections.

Sunday is election day in more than 1,000 cities across Quebec.

Polls closed at 8 p.m. and the results are coming in for several highly anticipated races.

1:42 a.m.

There are some tight races happening on the Island of Montreal.

In Hampstead, there is a difference of just 37 votes between incumbent mayor Jeremy Levi, who is leading with 868 votes (42 per cent of the vote), and opponent Jack Edery, with 14 out of 15 polls reporting.

Lachine is too close to call, with just a six-vote lead from Projet Montréal’s Maja Vodanovic, who has been in municipal politics for 13 years, over Ensemble Montréal borough mayor candidate Julie-Pascale Provost.

It’s a similar situation in Verdun, where the seat is up for grabs. Projet Montréal’s Céline-Audrey Beauregard has a slim lead (781 votes) over Ensemble Montréal’s Geneviève Desautels.

Meanwhile, there could be a new borough mayor in Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, where Ensemble Montréal is leading the race.

Candidate Stéphanie Valenzuela is ahead with more than 15,000 votes (50 per cent support).

Incumbent borough mayor Gracia Kasoki Katahwa is trailing behind with just under 9,858 votes (31 per cent).

1:06 a.m.

Former federal minister Marie-Claude Bibeau has been elected mayor of Sherbrooke.

In 2024, she decided not to seek re-election at the end of her term as MP for Compton-Stanstead in order to run for mayor.

According to preliminary results posted late in the evening on the city’s website, Bibeau received 46.45 per cent of the vote.

Guillaume Brien and Raïs Kibonge received 11.39 per cent and 11.14 per cent of the vote, respectively.

12:33 a.m.

Westmount has a new mayor, with Michael Stern leading after all of the polls reporting.

Preliminary results show that he won 2,554 votes (40 per cent of the vote), defeating the second runner-up, Lynne Casgrain, who won 2,144 votes (33 per cent).

Meanwhile, there is still a tight race in Hampstead.

With 10 of 15 polls reporting, incumbent mayor Jeremy Levi is trailing behind Jack Edery, who has 590 votes (42 per cent).

Levi is not far behind with 557 votes (39 per cent).

11:35 p.m.

“I feel very proud of this city right now, having elected a woman that’s an immigrant, a racialized woman. I think it’s the perfect representation of what this city is,” said Soraya Martinez Ferrada in an interview with CTV News at her campaign headquarters.

“And I think people should be proud and I hope that this is a message of hope, having somebody that wants to build bridges within our community, between francophones and anglophones and all of the city. I think we have so much work to do in front of us and I hope that everybody will do that with us.”

In her victory speech, she praised former mayor Valérie Plante for breaking the glass ceiling as the city’s first female mayor.

In a post on X, Plante congratulated Martinez Ferrada.

“At the end of this campaign of ideas, the people of Montreal have made their choice. As the outgoing mayor, my team and I will offer our full cooperation to the new team to ensure a smooth transition for the benefit of Montrealers.”

11:16 p.m.

“Good evening, Montreal!” Soraya Martinez Ferrada said to her supporters in her victory speech.

“This evening you have won, Montreal has chosen courage and ambition,” she said.

“You have sent a clear message that we need change, founded on listening, action and living in unity. I have heard you.”

10:57 p.m.

Addressing his supporters Sunday night, the head of Projet Montréal, Luc Rabouin, said he is stepping down as leader after losing to Soraya Martinez Ferrada.

“I assume the responsibility of this defeat,” he told the crowd.

In a post on X, Premier François Legault congratulated Martinez Ferrada.

“Our city is one of our main economic drivers, and we have major challenges ahead of us, whether in terms of the economy, housing, or mobility,” Legault said.

“I look forward to working together to strengthen Montreal’s prosperity and influence.”

10:44 p.m.

As supporters wait for Soraya Martinez Ferrada to address the crowd after being projected the winner in the Montreal mayoral race, she is leading with a significant lead.

According to Elections Montreal, she has a lead of nearly 20,000 votes.

Martinez Ferrada, leader of Ensemble Montréal, has about 42 per cent of the vote, versus Projet Montréal’s Luc Rabouin with 35 per cent support, with 2,658 out of 3,918 polls reporting.

10 p.m.

Soraya Martinez Ferrada is projected to be the next mayor of Montreal and will succeed outgoing mayor Valérie Plante, according to Radio-Canada.

9:45 p.m.

In Montreal’s West Island, there is very tight race in Pointe-Claire.

Incumbent Mayor Tim Thomas is facing stiff competition from his opponent, John Belvedere.

As of 9:45 p.m., Thomas has 572 votes, just a few votes behind Belvedere, who has 577 votes with 15 of 72 polls reporting.

9:38 p.m.

As of 9:30 p.m., Quebec City Mayor Bruno Marchand is projected to win another term, with 51 per cent of the votes.

He is also on track to win a majority on the city council.

As the incumbent mayor, Bruno Marchand had to defend his record against attacks from his opponents during the campaign.

This marks a heartbreaking defeat for former Liberal minister Sam Hamad, who was considered Bruno Marchand’s main rival.

Hamad had a difficult campaign. Early on, his party, Leadership Québec, used images of Montreal to talk about traffic congestion in Quebec City.

Sam Hamad also had to drop his candidate in Saint-Roch--Saint-Sauveur, Napoléon Woo, for controversial comments about homelessness.

One hour after the polls closed, Ensemble Montréal is still leading with a wide margin.

Soraya Martinez Ferrada has a 10,000-vote lead ahead of Projet Montréal’s Luc Rabouin.

She has just over 47 per cent of the vote, compared to Rabouin (33 per cent).

8:54 p.m.

Laval Mayor Stéphane Boyer is leading with a margin of 5,800 votes.

With 154 out of 887 polls reporting, Boyer has 60 per cent of the vote.

The 37-year-old mayor made promises on basic services like maintaining infrastructure, streets and parks “to make sure they’re clean, they’re well done, they’re safe.”

8:40 p.m.

In Quebec City, Bruno Marchand is on track to win a second term as mayor.

He has more than 56 per cent of the votes 30 minutes after the polls closed.

8:29 p.m.

Laval Mayor Stéphane Boyer has a sizable lead so far, according to preliminary results.

He has nearly 60 per cent of the vote with 5,317 votes.

8:15 p.m.

Over in Longueuil, on Montreal’s South Shore, incumbent Mayor Catherine Fournier’s party has declared victory.

Fournier has a massive lead against her opponent, Sacha Parisella, with 89 per cent of the vote as of 8:15 p.m.

8:05 p.m.

Early results are in for the mayoral race in Montreal and Ensemble Montréal has a sharp lead ahead of Projet Montréal.

Ensemble’s Soraya Martinez Ferrada is leading with 16,896 votes (51.8 per cent), ahead of Projet’s Luc Rabouin.

8:03 p.m.

In Montreal, the election campaign has been dominated by affordability, homelessness and transit.

At the campaign headquarters of Montreal mayoral candidate Soraya Martinez Ferrada, CTV News Montreal’s Matt Gilmour reports on her lead in the campaign and how her leading opponent, Projet Montréal’s Luc Rabouin, is remaining hopeful and optimistic on the last day of the election.

6 p.m.

Polls are still open for another two hours.

In Montreal, officials reported that, so far, voter turnout is at about 27 per cent.

At the end of the last municipal election, voter turnout was 38 per cent, a decrease of 4 per cent from the previous election in 2017.

Turnout for advance polling, which was held on Oct. 26, was 9.3 per cent, also a decrease from 2021, when advance voter turnout was 12.3 per cent.
