Quebec has recorded its third suspected femicide in 10 days, and the 14th since the beginning of the year, after a 41-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her partner in Inukjuak, Que. Provincial police were called to a home in the Inuit community roughly 1,500 kilometres north of Montreal on Aug. 24 at around 7:30 a.m. after a man showed up to a police station and said “he committed a crime,” Nancy Fournier, a spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), told CTV News. Officers went to a home and found a woman with stab wounds. She was sent to hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The man was arrested and questioned by investigators with the SQ’s crime against the person unit. According to a charge sheet, Charlie Palliser, 45, is facing one count of first-degree murder in the death of Elisabeth Qumak, who was identified in the document as “his intimate partner.” Palliser, who has a lengthy criminal record, appeared in court to face the murder charge and was remanded into custody pending his next court date on Dec. 14. Groups that advocate for victims of domestic violence were quick to denounce the killing of Qumak on social media and to express their condolences to her family. “We are fed up with dying at the hands of men. We are fed up with having to keep track of femicides, day after day,” wrote Regroupement des maisons pour femmes victimes de violence conjugale in a Facebook post on Wednesday. “Inaction is no longer an option. Tomorrow, the political parties will be campaigning. We call on them to commit to ending violence against women.” 2 women killed in Montreal Two other women in Montreal were allegedly killed by their intimate partners in recent days. On Aug. 15, Leakkhena Seng, 44, was fatally stabbed in an apartment in Montreal’s Saint-Michel neighbourhood. Police say a man, who also suffered stab wounds, was taken to hospital and is considered a suspect. The man was Seng’s intimate partner, police say. He died of his injuries a few days later. Then, two days later, another woman, also in her 40s, was found in an apartment in Saint-Michel with serious injuries and pronounced dead at the scene. Betoven Etienne, 35, was found seriously injured and taken to hospital. He was later charged with first-degree murder in the death of the victim, 41-year-old Kerline Jean.
