TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index lost more than 200 points Wednesday, weighed down by losses in the basic materials sector, while U.S. markets were mixed. The S&P/TSX composite index was down 224.40 points at 35,235.87. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 443.87 points at 50,906.05. The S&P 500 index was down 19.30 points at 7,651.54, while the Nasdaq composite was up 63.52 points at 26,861.06. The Canadian dollar traded for 70.24 cents US, according to XE.com, compared with 70.48 cents US on Tuesday. The November crude oil contract rose US$1.04 to US$90.42 per barrel.
