A Saskatchewan Roughriders fan favourite is returning to the Green and White, as the team acquired kicker Brett Lauther in a trade with the Ottawa Redblacks Wednesday. In exchange, the Roughriders have sent their fifth-round selection in the 2027 CFL Draft to Ottawa. The Truro, Nova Scotia product spent eight seasons with the Roughriders between 2018 and 2025, suiting up for 114 regular season games and eight post-season appearances, including the Grey Cup Championship in 2025. Lauther went 10-for-10 on game-winning field-goal attempts as Rider, tied for second in franchise history with Paul McCallum. His memorable moments include the capper in the 2019 Labour Day Classic — in which he memorably went on to celebrate in Pil Country — and an overtime game-winner against Calgary in the 2021 Western Semi-Final. All together, Lauther is 295-for-360 on field goals as a Roughrider. His accuracy rate (81.9 per cent) is the best in team history for anyone with 100-plus field goal attempts. He is third all-time in points scored as a Roughrider with 1,110, behind Paul McCallum (1,613) and Dave Ridgway (2,374). The longtime Rider kicker was released at the end of last season and signed with Ottawa. In 12 games as a Redblack this year, Lauther is 32 of 34 on field goals (94.1%), including a season-high 56 yarder against the Stampeders in Week 17.
