HALIFAX - Homecoming celebrations at the University of Guelph in Ontario saw student parties spill into the streets leading to a massive police response and numerous charges. In Halifax, Dalhousie University’s homecoming weekend featured 27 unsanctioned parties shut down by police and 36 tickets were issued under the Liquor Control Act. Police in the city now have a simple and strict message as Saint Mary’s University prepares for its homecoming this weekend. “If something larger, such as what happened at Guelph was to occur, we are prepared and we are always ready for something like that,” said Const. Martin Cromwell of the Halifax Regional Police. He said community response officers are educating students on potential consequences and that there will be an increased police presence around the university. “First and foremost, we stress safety for the students, and we ask them to consider their alcohol consumption,” said Cromwell, adding “it could lead to a night in our cells, and people could be arrested for public intoxication.” The president of the Saint Mary’s University Students’ Association (SMUSA) Liza Zahid said homecoming is an event that often transforms into a celebration for students as they begin a new school year. “I would just reiterate that students are welcome to have the best time that they want to have, but to do it in a safe and respectful manner and we also want to give the students a good time,” said Zahid. “I think homecoming is one of the best weekends throughout the year, and every student looks forward to it, and every student knows how to have a good time and be respectful of our neighbours.” Saint Mary’s will feature alcohol-free homecoming activities planned over the three-day period, starting this Friday. “We have the SMU Huskies football game against Acadia, we have a homecoming brunch that is happening and we also have a family skate night,” said Zahid. “And, we have activities for students who want to celebrate and have that high-energy homecoming feel.” Zahid also pointed out Saint Mary’s University homecoming events will take place on campus, which is contained within a city block. Organizers hope the compact setting of the university will help keep the festivities safe and under control during homecoming weekend.
