A Quebec judge is set to rule on a request for an injunction that could prevent two men, a father and son, from continuing to donate sperm. This comes after a Noovo Info documentary revealed they may have fathered hundreds of children. The legal request was brought forth by a donor recipient, though many other mothers were also in the courtroom on Monday. One of the men has admitted to fathering at least 109 children, though said there could be more. The Noovo Info documentary estimates the number could be closer to 550. The lawyer for the main plaintiff, who cannot be identified, argued that the men lied about how many children they have and minimized their total number of sperm donations. The lawyer insisted that this violated his client’s right to physical integrity and could create issues for the children down the line, including the psychological distress of not knowing how many siblings they have. The two men are representing themselves in court, and have argued that if the injunction goes through, it would infringe on their rights to have children. All the same, one of the men admitted that he did withhold information from some of the mothers, adding that he does not want to stop donating. Currently, in Quebec, there are no limits to sperm donation. However, the province is looking into changing that. Arguments are set to continue on Tuesday.
