Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville on Montreal’s South Shore is offering $100 to its citizens who give up their gasoline-powered gardening tools to go electric. It’s part of the city’s climate plan. Households can receive up to $100 to replace their gas-powered lawn mower, weed snipper or leaf blower with electric models. The city is doing this to encourage citizens to opt for more environmentally friendly ways. Resident Fred Steinle says he’s considering it. “It’s a good incentive for me to trade in mine, which is kind of old and looking to change,” he said. “It’s better for the environment. It’s a choice I would make.” Before Nov. 30, residents can visit StBruno.ca to print and complete the financial assistance form. Then, they must drop off the eligible gasoline-powered gardening tool at the Saint-Bruno EcoCentre at 600 Sagard Street. The machine’s gas tank must be empty beforehand. Once the person in charge verifies the tool and stamps the form, a new electric gardening tool can be purchased before the end of 2026. The city is encouraging residents to shop local. This program is part of St-Bruno’s climate plan to reduce its carbon footprint. “Having an electric lawnmower, well, it’s good for the environment,” said Steinle. The city has set aside an annual budget of $10,000 for the entire program. The Quebec Municipalities Union told CTV News there are only two other cities offering this kind of program.
